    Weaving on a Rigid Heddle Loom is fast and easy. Quickly weave scarves, washcloths, or placemats. Use it to sample yarn combinations faster than your table or floor loom. We will cover direct warping onto the loom, warp stripes, weft stripes and other tips and tricks along the way.

    We have looms available, so you can try before you buy. If you choose not to purchase the loom, but wish to continue weaving, simply leave it here and join us for Fiber Circles to work on your project.

    Curious about crochet or ready to build confidence with the basics? In this beginner-friendly class we’ll learn fundamental crochet skills while making a cozy set of hand warmers and/or a scarf using a simple and elegant pattern from Churchmouse Yarns & Teas.

    Students will be introduced to essential crochet stitches including chain stitch, slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, and triple crochet. Along the way we’ll cover how to hold yarn and hook comfortably, how to read a pattern, and tips for keeping your stitches even. As you practice each stitch, you’ll begin creating a warm and practical accessory set that’s perfect for everyday wear or gift-giving.

    This class is ideal for absolute beginners or knitters who would like to add crochet to their fiber toolbox. Come ready to learn, practice, and enjoy the rhythm of working with yarn!

    Turn your spring pruning into colorful plant stakes, garden decorations, or in home arrangements. We will learn to warp Y-shaped braches and use scrap or decorative yarn for weft weaving. This is a chance to use fun decorative and colorful yarns from your stash. We will explore a few tapestry techniques to add interest to your weaving.

    Materials to Bring: Colorful and playful scrap yarns, crochet hooks, tapestry needles, Y-shaped branches with some strength at the V, C-clamps or Kwik-Grips.

    Make a piece of your own handcrafted wool felt!  You'll choose gray or white fleece, and make enough flat wool felt to make a wool hat (or whatever else you desire).  Felting is an ancient and satisfying process.  The skills here will make it possible for you to make larger sheets of flat felt, or create shaped pieces.  We'll use carded wool batts from Jacob or Romney breed sheep.  Roll up your sleeves and get to work!

  • Indigo Dyeing!

    Dip your cloth into the magic that is Indigo. Endless blue color will be at your fingertips. Choose between cotton yarn or cotton fat quarters. We will do some simple Shibori techniques on fabric or a gradient dip dye on yarn. We will experiment with 3 different vat types, fructose, henna, and banana.

    Materials: 3 fat quarters of fabric or 3 skeins of cotton yarn are included with the class. You are welcome to bring additional plant fiber (cotton, linen, tencel, etc...) fabric or yarn to dye. Each piece of fabric must be 1 yard or smaller and yarn must be 4oz or less to fit in the dye vat.

    No previous experience required.

    Please bring kitchen gloves (if you have them) and wear clothes you are comfortable getting dye on.

    This class can be repeated to continue focusing on knitting basics, or join a Fiber Circle to connect with other supportive, fiber-y folks as you continue your knitting journey!

  • Knit Your Own Emotional Support Chicken!

    Everybody needs an Emotional Support Chicken of their own, and they are fun and easy to knit!  We will be using the pattern for the Emotional Support Chicken Jr., by Annette Corsino (pattern included with registration), a smaller version of the original ESC.

    The shaping of the chicken is accomplished with a series of "wrap and turns".   While we won't finish the full assembly during class time, you should be able to get enough done to easily finish up on your own.  You are also encouraged to come to one of our three weekly Fiber Circles where you can get extra help and support, or just come show off your chicken!  Once you get the gist, you'll be ready to tackle the full-sized Emotional Support Chicken.

    Prerequisites:  Students should be comfortable  with basic knit and purl stitches, and cast-on and bind-off.

    Materials to bring to class (or purchase on-site): 

    • US7 needles (straight or circular both work)
    • 2 locking stitch markers
    • tapestry needle
    • 40 yards of worsted weight yarn to use as the primary color (a variegated yard works well for this!), 
    • 10 yards of a contrasting color (solid is best). 
    • You will need small amounts of yarn in red and yellow/orange for the comb and beak-- if you don't have this, we can provide it.  We can also provide safety and  Polyfil stuffing if you don't have your own preferred filler.

    For many textile artists, buying yarn is where their project starts. But what if you could spin the yarn yourself? You could make exactly the right yarn for the job. Join Anna Hosick-Kalahan – co-owner of Skagit Woolen Works – to learn about spinning on a spinning wheel. We’ll cover basic wheel mechanics and maintenance, the properties of wool and other spinning fibers, and start the process of spinning your first singles yarns. We’ll talk about staple length, draft, and twist, and there will be a variety of Skagit Woolen Works’ regionally-sourced wool roving to practice and play with.

    In this class, you'll use special barbed felting needles to shape and sculpt fluffy wool into charming pumpkins in your choice of style and colors - Jack o' lanterns for Halloween, or harvest decor just in time for Thanksgiving!
    No experience necessary - the class is suitable for beginners or experienced needle felters.

    All supplies will be provided, including:

    • Enough wool to make several small pumpkins
    • A needle felting kit to take home and continue crafting
    • Examples of different pumpkin styles for creative inspiration. 
    Note: felting needles are very sharp and should be handled with care.

  • Learn To Handpaint Yarn at Carnation Farms

    Take a trip out to Carnation Farms and learn to handpaint wool yarn with our own Yvonne Ellsworth. She will cover 2-3 different dyeing techniques, including variegated stripes, tonal building of colors, and speckles. Included with the class are 2 skeins of sport weight yarn from Carnation Farms' own flock. You are welcome to bring additional wool yarn or spinning fiber. Yvonne will also have additional yarn available for purchase. If you are interested in dyeing a sweater quantity of yarn during the class, please makes sure to contact us to make sure enough supplies are on hand.

    Please note: Dye may get on skin or clothes, so wear clothing that is safe to get dye on. Gloves will be provided, but dye might still get on hands, which washes off after about a day.  Also, there will be some downtime during the workshop while dyes set, so bring a project to keep your hands busy!

    If you can brew a cup of tea, you can dye wool!  Join us at Carnation Farms to learn basic techniques for extracting color from plants onto protein fibers like wool and silk.  We'll identify some local plants you can use, talk about mordants, and dye sample yarns for you to take home.  Plants we'll learn from include onions, madder, hollyhock, dahlias, with special guest appearances from indigo and lichens.  The sample card in the picture is from a dye party with Valley Spinner's Guild in Snohomish.

  • Introduction to Tapestry Weaving

    No experience is required! In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how to warp a frame loom, space and stabilize the warp, create a basic plain weave, and develop good weaving tension and selvedges. We’ll explore color changes, joining and blending techniques, along with one or two simple texture techniques to add dimension and interest to your work. 

    We’ll also cover basic finishing techniques so you can complete and take home your woven piece.

    This class can be taken more than once, allowing you to build on your skills and explore new techniques with each visit.

    Materials:  All needed materials and supplies are included in the registration fee, but feel free to bring any leftover yarn scraps that you live from home to add color or texture to your piece.

    We will be working on Schacht Lilli tapestry looms, which  you will have the option to purchase onsite.  Otherwise, please come to one or more Fiber Circles to finish your piece and receive extra support!

    together creates strength, balance and character. If you are comfortable spinning consistent singles on your spinning wheel, then join Anna Hosick-Kalahan - co-owner of Skagit Woolen Works -- for a next step in your spinning adventures! We'll talk about the primary
    points of plying for balance, including direction, amount of twist, and numbers of plies, and how setting or blocking your yarn can be the
    definitive final step. We'll practice plying 2- and 3-ply yarns, while talking about different tools and techniques. Once we've learned "the
    rules" of plying, we dive right in to a discussion on how breaking them can open the doors to non-traditional and art-yarns.

  • Knit a Christmas Stocking

    There's still time!  In this workshop we will go over how a stocking is constructed and how to incorporate stranded colorwork into the stocking. We will be using the pattern for the Holiday 1 Doodle Stocking from Pacific Knit Co., which includes several different colorwork chart options (pattern is included with registration, and will be emailed to you prior to class).  This stocking is constructed from the top down, starting with ribbing, and then adding colorwork charts. We will discuss alternative construction, choosing colors that will make your patterns pop, picking motifs for everyone on your list, and how to knit stranded colorwork 2 handed.

    After class students are encouraged to work at their own pace, then check back in during Fiber Circles to complete the next steps of the heel and toe.

    Prerequisites: If you can knit a hat, then you can knit a stocking! Must be able to knit in the round.

    Materials to bring (or purchase on-site):
    Yarn: 2 balls of contrasting colors in either DK or Worsted Weight

    Needles and notions:

    This project is based on the design created by www.sweetsofties.com.  We’ll begin by making two granny squares. This is a chance to practice color combining and refine your stitch work. Once your squares are complete, we’ll assemble them into a charming three-dimensional chicken, learning simple joining and shaping techniques.

    This class is perfect for those looking to build confidence with granny squares, practice core crochet stitches, play with creative combinations and enjoy a fun, creative project.
